Position Overview:

The Director of Engineering and Water Quality oversees and directs all facility-related operations, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life safety systems, while ensuring pools, spas, and wellness areas consistently meet the highest health, safety, and regulatory standards. The role manages preventive maintenance, inspections, capital improvement projects, and the performance of third-party vendors to maintain operational excellence across the property. It includes leading the water quality team, ensuring compliance with Certified Pool Operator (CPO) standards, and implementing sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives. The position fosters a culture of safety, accountability, and service excellence while ensuring all systems, facilities, and amenities operate reliably and efficiently for guests and staff.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  • Oversee mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fire/life safety systems
  • Ensure pools, spas, and wellness areas meet health and safety standards
  • Conduct regular inspections and preventive maintenance across guest rooms and public spaces
  • Lead capital improvement projects and renovations
  • Manage bids, contracts, and performance of third-party vendors
  • Ensure sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives are implemented
  • Hire, train, and manage water quality staff
  • Schedule and supervise daily operations and emergency repairs
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and service excellence
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Ensure pool and spa operations meet Certified Pool Operator (CPO) standards
  • Direct water quality technician’s tasks during the duration of their shift
  • Oversee and perform basic preventative maintenance tasks
  • Oversee maintenance of spas/pools and facility cleanliness and good housekeeping in back of house areas.
  • Oversee common emergency repairs
  • New Water Quality Tech onboarding training
  • Perform pool/spa facility and equipment audits
  • Ensure that pools/spas are closed in cases of noncompliance and returned to compliance before they are reopened
  • Oversee, coordinate and participate in accurate and thorough batching and mixing of inspired pool/spa water
  • Oversee routine water quality testing using appropriate testing kits and equipment to measure parameters such as pH levels, chlorine or bromine levels, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and other chemical factors
  • Oversee water quality data, testing results, and accurate records of water chemistry levels and other relevant information
  • Monitor all water chemistry from water quality team adjustments of chemicals, including chlorine, bromine, pH balancers, and mineral salts, as needed to maintain proper levels
  • Oversee the maintenance and operation of water filtration and circulation systems, chemical feeders, and other equipment used in water quality control
  • Follow established health and safety regulations, including water quality standards, pool and spa regulations, and local codes, to ensure a safe and healthy environment for guests
  • Other duties as requested by General Manager

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Must have a current active certification in Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or obtain the certification upon hire
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or similar degree is a plus
  • A solid understanding of water chemistry, pool and spa water treatment, and the use of water quality testing equipment
  • Willingness to learn and develop problem-solving abilities to address water quality issues effectively
  • Willingness and ability to follow health and safety regulations related to water quality and pool operations
  • Ability to bend, climb a ladder, walk on uneven terrain as well as lift to 50 lbs
  • Effective communication and the ability to work as part of a team under the direction of the Director of Aquatics
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
